Sofie Steegen is a ceramic sculptor and painter based in Ghent. Her work spans ceramic tile paintings and bas-reliefs, where form and color emerge through an intuitive dialogue with her materials. Sofie draws inspiration from eclectic sources, ranging from historical artifacts to whimsical trinkets, often infused with a sense of innocence and playfulness. Her artistic universe is rooted in themes of eroticism, Greek mythology, and the natural world.
In her bas-reliefs, she introduces seemingly naïve characters into scenes that evoke a Libertine spirit. Yet, beneath the surface, ambiguity reigns. The nude body takes center stage, and the boundaries between man and woman, human and animal, begin to dissolve, inviting the viewer into a space of uncertainty and curiosity.
Her recent body of work, the “Marseille Series,” features sculptural vases shaped by a year she spent living and working in Marseille. The spirit of the South, its warmth, sensuality, and sun-soaked charm, permeates the collection.
