Mélanie Berger

Melanie works on paper, exploring unstable and indecisive images that speak to the impermanence of all living things. Time is a central parameter in her practice, which unfolds through two interrelated phases: the daily studio process and the moment of exhibition, where the work is reactivated in space.

In the studio, paper is cut, folded, layered, and placed on the floor. Melanie applies oil, pigments, water, kaolin, clay, and other materials in successive gestures, carefully observing their reactions to impregnation, temperature, and humidity. Through this slow accumulation of actions, sets of images emerge, marked by differences, repetitions, and subtle variations. Each work seeks a fragile point of balance, a moment of appearance when the formless begins to speak and communicate.

Every drawing functions as a material to be reactivated. Its history, movements, stains, absorptions, and darkening, becomes part of a larger, evolving whole, conceived as an organism in motion rather than a fixed object.

Melanie’s practice reveals strong parallels between artistic creation and the processes of living systems: evolution, transformation, exchange, and interdependence. The work proposes an ecological way of thinking, reminding us that no action exists in isolation but is always embedded within complex and changing environments.
