Joséphine Suillaud’s painting is a very concrete narrative about the relationship to matter, its transformation, and the layering of time: which action comes first? She explores the confrontation and interaction between elements that don’t naturally belong together — combining natural and synthetic materials — and observing how they behave.
She glues, tears, scrapes, scratches, incises, folds, crumples, covers, and sands… repeating the same gestures over and over, moving between brutality and softness, always attentive to unexpected traces. In the studio, she allows herself to be surprised by the richness and beauty that materials can reveal. Her practice is almost instrumental. A painting is successful when it seems to have come into being on its own.
