Claude Cattelain

Initially trained in painting, he gradually began dismantling the stretchers of his canvases and using the wooden frames to create often unstable constructions. Video quickly became part of his practice, capturing the elevations and collapses of his ephemeral structures and opening his experiments to public performance.

In recent years, his work has also developed in sculpture and spatial practice, through large-scale installations created in dialogue with architecture. Relationships to the body, movement, and precarious balance are central elements of his work, which is fueled by reflections on the emptiness of our existence and the poetry of the persistent desire to move forward and remain upright.

His work has been presented in international institutions, including the Jeu de Paume (Paris), Villa Arson, and Mucem, and through numerous solo exhibitions at museums and galleries in France and Belgium. His performances have taken place at leading venues such as the Palais de Tokyo, Kanal–Centre Pompidou, M HKA Antwerp, and the Sainsbury Centre for Visual Arts in Norwich. His work is held in prominent public collections, including the Cnap, Frac Picardie, Frac Occitanie, and the Fédération Wallonie-Bruxelles. Since 2022, he has been Head of the Sculpture Department at the École Nationale Supérieure d’Art de La Cambre in Brussels.
